The platinum's on the wall (2001)
![]() |
With their sleek, cyber R&B sounds and lyrical/video world of cars, money, shopping, boys, and sex, Texas's Destiny's Child have hardly broken any new ground. However, The Platinum's on the Wall captures them at their career height and proves no one is doing this stuff with more grandeur, sass, and ice-cool efficiency. To paraphrase one commentator in 2001: This is Destiny's Child's world, the rest of us are just living in it. Beginning with their first, 1997 hit, the slow-burning, teasing "No, No, No (Part 1)" and including the foxy trot of "Bills, Bills, Bills" (an attack on backsliding homeboys as withering as TLC's "No Scrubs"), these videos, which feature costume changes on an almost frame-by-frame basis, are certainly lavish. |
The group, however, is seen to best advantage on the likes of "Say My Name," in which Beyonce Knowles, the group's leader and true star, gets to show off her persona a little. Disappointingly, the extra "biography" feature here is not a steamy account of their rapid rise and frequent personnel changes but a dreary, text-only account of their numerous TV appearances and platinum sales figures.

Destiny's Child - World Tour (2003)
![]() |
This concert, from a 2003 performance in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), is full of energy and features a great mix of vocals and music that will please any follower of Destiny's Child or fan of R&B music concerts. The show has an exciting opening with "Independent Women", followed by a half-dozen more jammin' dance hits, then calms down in the middle with some slow grooves (featuring Kelly and Michelle as leads), and resumes with more dance jams through to the end. It's a well-paced show. The girls look and sing great, the band is tight, and the dancers add a nice ingredient to the funk-party setting. |
If you're a DC fan or a collector of concert videos, you'll be happy buying this DVD.Tracks: Program Start, Independent Women Part 1, No, No, No Part 2 (Featuring Wyclef Jean), Bug a Boo, Bills, Bills, Bills, Get On the Bus, Nasty Girl, Emotion, Ooh Child, Heard a Word, Dangerously in Love, Gospel Melody, Bootylicious, Say My Name, Work it Out, Proud Mary, Jumpin', Jumpin', Survivor, Happy Face.

The Seat Filler
![]() |
A slight but charming romantic comedy, The Seat Filler stars Duane Martin (Scream 2, Above the Rim) as Derrick, a young man struggling to make ends meet as he studies for the bar exam. To make some extra cash, Derrick takes a job as a "seat filler"--a person who hops into an unoccupied chair at a televised awards show to make attendance look perpetually full. At one event, Derrick happens to be seated next to recording star Jhnelle (Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child), and breaks one of the cardinal rules of seat-filling: he starts a conversation. Things click, and soon Derrick's small fibs become major lies as he tries to sustain the mutual romantic attraction. From there the movie travels in mostly expected directions, but it's quite funny, especially spiked with the manic antics of Derrick's best friend, E.J. (DeRay Davis). |
The Seat Filler is the initial entry in a new way of distributing films called the Momentum Experience. Instead of traditional movie-distribution deals, the Momentum Experience presents African American-themed movies in non-traditional venues, preceded by live music and comedy. The Seat Filler isn't a movie that will change the world, but the Momentum Experience may in a small way change an industry.
